Br. Martin Erspamer, O.S.B.

Brother Martin has been a Benedictine monk and lived at St. Meinrad Archabbey in southern Indiana since 2005. He attended a Marianist High School and became influenced by the work of the Marianist artists, joining their community in 1971. He received an MFA from Boston University in 1986 and began his career working in painting, illustration, ceramics, stained glass, furniture and worship space design. Brother Martin received his certification as a liturgical designer from Catholic Theological Union of Chicago.

A well-known liturgical artist and liturgical consultant, Brother Martin continues to work in a wide range of media, including pottery, stained glass, and wood, and is nationally known for his illustration of sacred themes. He has creatively renovated over fifty churches and his stained glass designs have transformed many worship spaces. Brother Martin’s religious illustrations are well known and his art has been used on covers for many OCP missals. He was commissioned to create seventeen original illustrations for The Roman Missal, Third Edition, published in 2011. His art celebrates the Benedictine motto – “that in all things may God be glorified.”
